Sundarban Villagers Lead the Way on World Environment Day

In alignment with the 2024 World Environment Day theme, “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration,” the villagers of Kumirmari Village under  Hinalganj Block, located on the riverbanks within the Sundarbans islands of West Bengal, demonstrated their commitment to land restoration and water conservation.

The celebration saw active participation from villagers such as Sagarika Hawli, Jayanti Majhi and Sandhya Mondal , who planted saplings along the riverbanks to combat soil erosion. This crucial initiative is part of a broader effort to stabilize the soil and enhance local biodiversity, addressing the pressing issue of land degradation.

In addition to the tree plantation drive, the community collectively took an oath to conserve water, reflecting the importance of sustainable water management practices. This pledge is particularly significant given the recent improvements in water infrastructure under the Jal Jeevan Mission, which has provided households with access to clean drinking water through tap connections.

In a touching display of gratitude, some villagers offered flowers to their tap connections, symbolizing their appreciation for this vital resource and the improvements in their daily lives. The event was organized by the villagers with the support of ISA IMAGIN  . This collaboration highlighted the power of community-led efforts in promoting environmental stewardship.
