STOP Diarrhoea Campaign in Birbhum : Combating Diarrhoea with Community Engagement

The Public Health and Engineering Department, Government of West Bengal recently spearheaded a vigorous campaign in Ajoypur village, Birbhum, aimed at curbing the incidence of  Diarrhoea . As part of their broader mission to ensure the success of the Jal Jeevan Mission, officials and engineers are working tirelessly to deliver piped drinking water to every household.

This drama was part of a continuous campaign, with multiple shows organized across the region. The campaign, bolstered by IMAGIN, the Implementation Support Agency (ISA) of Birbhum District for the West Bengal Public Health and Engineering Department in the Jal Jeevan Mission, took a creative turn with a street drama performance. Held in Ajoypur, this drama focused on using safe, purified piped water, effective water management, waste management, and proper handwashing techniques. Villagers were also advised against the misuse of water resources.

The audience, comprising schoolchildren and villagers, engaged actively with the program, reflecting a community ready to embrace better health practices.

Adding to the cultural tapestry of the event, a singer performed a traditional song and presented the Pat Chitra of Birbhum. Through this artistic medium, the significance of purified drinking water and the goals of the Jal Jeevan Mission were eloquently conveyed.

Seema Mondal, a village woman, expressed her appreciation: “This drama has taught us a lot about the importance of clean water and how to maintain hygiene in our daily lives.”

Saheli Sarkar, a local student, echoed this sentiment: “The performances were not only entertaining but also educational. We must understand these issues to keep our community healthy.”

The event was attended by Basudeb Mahara, the Pradhan of Tiplara Gram Panchayat from the Suir block, who lauded the initiative. The audience, comprising schoolchildren and villagers, engaged actively with the program, reflecting a community ready to embrace better health practices.

This proactive effort by the Public Health and Engineering Department and ISA IMAGIN  is a promising step towards eliminating diarrhea and promoting sustainable health and hygiene practices in rural areas.
