Nadia Students Focusing on Root Causes of Environmental Issues

The World Environment Day celebration at the BDO Office Conference Hall in Haringhata Block, Nadia, took a unique approach this year. Organized by IMAGIN as Implementation Support Agency (ISA) under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Nadia, the event delved into the root causes of environmental problems, moving beyond traditional campaigns to foster deeper understanding and actionable solutions.

The highlight of the day was a creative photo session where students posed with their hands forming the letters of the hashtag #GenerationRestoration. This symbolic gesture emphasized their commitment to restoring ecosystems and highlighted the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

Under the theme “In Search of Root Causes of Environmental Problems,” the event highlighted pressing issues such as air pollution, climate change, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea-level rise, and food security. With climate change posing significant challenges like rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and disruptions in global food systems, the need for sustainable practices has never been more urgent.

This year’s event featured a panel discussion and utilized the Problem Solution Tree method to identify and address the underlying causes of environmental degradation. The program saw active participation from a diverse group of stakeholders, including Sabuj Jol Joddha members (Students), nodal teachers, the BDO, BL & LRO, DC, ADC, BMOH, AE, JE, Chemists from the State Referral Lab, and water volunteers from ISA-Nadia.

The Block Development Officer opened the session with a call to action, urging participants to engage deeply with environmental issues. “To create meaningful change, we must understand the roots of these problems and work collectively to solve them,” she said.

Students were encouraged to ask questions on environment

The event concluded with a symbolic and unifying activity: each participant pledged to protect the environment by placing their handprint on a Dream Tree. This act served as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard our planet.

This year’s World Environment Day celebration in Haringhata Block not only raised awareness but also empowered participants to take concrete actions towards environmental conservation. By focusing on the root causes of environmental issues, ISA-Nadia has set a precedent for future initiatives, highlighting the importance of understanding and addressing the foundational problems to achieve sustainable change.
